Manuscript Types
Scientific Engineering considers the following manuscript types. Word ranges are indicative and exclude references, tables and figure captions. Authors may explain justified departures in the cover letter.
Research Article
Original theoretical, experimental, computational or field-based engineering research. Research Articles should present a clear question or objective, appropriate methods, results, limitations and conclusions. Suggested length: 4,000–8,000 words. External peer review.
Review Article
A critical and structured synthesis of an established or emerging engineering field. Reviews should go beyond a descriptive bibliography and identify evidence, limitations, research gaps and future directions. Suggested length: 5,000–10,000 words. External peer review. A pre-submission inquiry is encouraged.
Engineering Case Study
A technically documented account of design, deployment, process improvement, infrastructure, technology transfer or engineering implementation. Case Studies should explain context, decisions, evidence, limitations and lessons that can inform other settings. Suggested length: 3,000–7,000 words. External peer review.
Technical Note
A concise report of a method, device, dataset, process, prototype, test, replication, negative result or focused technical improvement. Suggested length: 2,000–4,000 words. External peer review.
Perspective or Commentary
An evidence-informed analysis of an engineering issue, emerging technology, standard, policy interface or research direction. These submissions should be clearly argued and appropriately referenced. Suggested length: 1,500–3,500 words. Editorial assessment and external review where appropriate.
Extended Conference Paper
A substantially developed manuscript based on work previously presented at a conference. Authors must disclose the earlier version and explain the additions. The manuscript must meet the journal’s originality requirements and undergo the same editorial assessment and external peer review as a regular submission. Suggested length: 4,000–8,000 words.
Editorial, Correction, Retraction Notice or Journal Announcement
Content issued by the editors or publisher for journal communication or maintenance of the scholarly record. Such items are not presented as externally peer reviewed and will be clearly labelled.
